about

Bad Sekta is extremely proud to present ‘Eviction Scheme’; a limited-edition album (CD/digital) from the utter maestro that is Lastboss!

123 hand-numbered CD copies only!

Fourteen powerfully innovative, rewardingly eclectic tracks, produced between 2010 and 2022 (primarily during 2019 to 2022) and covering vast swathes of musical territory. As per Lastboss himself, the album comprises two distinct sections: “part 1 is Breakcore, Jungle and Techno-based. Part 2, however, is a mixed bag of Ambient, Industrial, Experimental and Orchestral/Pop”.

Equally accomplished producing incredibly good breakcore, abstract ambience, modern classical, Chinese grime and more, Lastboss is truly one of independent electronic music’s best-kept secrets, contributing many compilation tracks, EPs and albums to Bad Sekta since the label’s inception back in 2005. Raised in sunny Manchester (England), Lastboss is currently settled in China, from where he continues to release a prolific amount of wide-ranging and high-quality music, as well as handling production for artists working across a multitude of musical genres.

Lastboss considers ‘Eviction Scheme’ as his finest work to date - a perception with which we (and we hope YOU) wholeheartedly agree!

DETAILED OVERVIEW:
The album’s first track, ‘Sawn-Off MRI’ is a full-on badboy of a breakcore belter, combining frenetic, hyper-edited breakbeats, classic rave stabbery, DSP trickery and MC snips to maximum effect. This one’s proper!

Track two, ‘BHS VHS’, is another energetic breakbeat-based ravecore track, proving a little more playful than its predecessor, eventually introducing a gorgeous melodic motif which Lastboss returns to (albeit in lovingly mutated form) later in the collection…

The album’s highly engaging third track, ‘Thread Threat Theatre 2’ really manages to maintain the excitement level, cleverly using space plus unexpectedly elegant musical changes to profound emotional and energetic effect.

Moving on, ‘Rice Killer Part 3’ brings the tempo down ever-so slightly from the tracks prior, kicking off with some delicately floating synths and steam, prior to the addition of distinctly accomplished, ever-evolving Amen edits, together forming a disconcertingly wistful glimpse of stately breakcore junglism.

‘The Sycophant in the Room’, the album’s fourth track, begins as another of Lastboss’ excellent, heavily jungle-influenced pieces of deconstructed breakcore, strutting its stuff with excellent pedigree, replete with addictively-mangled vocal samples.

Further lush, dark rave-mangling action comes courtesy of ‘Extrasensory Deception’: essentially a mid-nineties UK jungle tune reaching its full potential via the skills of this extraordinarily talented producer; dynamically interweaving everyone’s favourite rave stabs to maximum effect. “Engineer, turn up the monitor!”

Ratcheting “Eviction Scheme” down to a statelier pace, track seven, ‘ThePermanentRecord’, is reminiscent of the great European synthesizer icons of the seventies, offering a portal overlooking constantly changing, gracefully melancholy vistas.

Demonstrating the more classical side of Lastboss’ output, ‘Dear Spider-Fearing Reader’ is a delightfully evocative composition, incorporating amazing treated vocals and a host of orchestral instruments, resulting in a truly cinematic slice of nirvana. Someone lend this man a full meatspace orchestra!

Track nine is the magnificent ‘Glory’, entrancing the listener with its inspired combination of abstract ambience, syncopated percussion and processed instruments - soon expanding into sparse, effective techno territory, subtly apocalyptic in its apparent intent.

‘Trio Mediaeval (Lastboss Remix)’ is a lushly nostalgic slice of meditatively angelic atmospherics, pulsing with barely-contained energy and emotion throughout the captivating expansion of its particular aural galaxy.

Another piece situated firmly within the orchestral continuum, track eleven, ‘Foot on the Serpent 2’, is an emphatic, compelling exercise in melodic, minimally-percussive music, tantalising throughout its skilled execution.

The album’s twelfth track, ‘A Bit of the Old Ultra-Silence’, turns to more minimalist-influenced, meditative architecture, primarily built from processed guitar and heavenly gated male vocals, evoking both longing and comfort.

Slowly peaking, invoking strange waves crashing against ineffably alien shores, track thirteen, ‘Port Unveil’, is a gorgeously swirling, ever-circling sonic bath of soothing ambience.

Rounding ‘Eviction Scheme’ off is the marvellously electromagnetic ‘Cloaked/Clocked’, a patiently pulsing soundscape of granular waveforms, every peak and trough radiating benevolent purpose at the culmination of our journey…
